Save the boundary waters

The Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters is leading the effort to ensure permanent protection for the Boundary Waters Wilderness, America’s most visited Wilderness and Minnesota’s crown jewel, from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining. This project was created to help raise awareness to this issue. I am currently working with the campaign to deploy this project.

Why this issue matters

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is America’s most visited wilderness and a place of great importance to many Minnesotans and all those who come to visit. Proposed sulfide-ore copper mining threatens to pollute pristine waters, end once of a lifetime experiences and disrupt a thriving economy.

How to help

I chose to create this project because I wanted to use my skills as a designer to benefit the Save the Boundary Waters Campaign, a cause I believe in and want to help. Lots of ideas bounced around my head as to what I could create. After much thought and research I decided an augmented reality postcard, compatible with Snapchat, would increase awareness, and connect with a younger audience.

Getting things started

Pictured here is my first storyboard I developed to plan out the project. Complete with coffee stains from being transported around town. Unfortunately, this poorly taken photo is all I have because I foolishly threw it away, not realizing it’s importance to showing my process.

Unity through texture

To make the scenes of the animation connected, a series of different texture overlays were utilized to make the video cohesive

The scenes also re-use colors from a large palette to unify the style

Call to action

The call-to-action at the end of the video is a harsh comparison from the rest of the scenes. Instead of sunshine and fast moving animations, this ending features a long drawn-out message with verbiage prompting the viewer to visit the campaign’s website and make a difference.

Next Steps

I am currently working alongside the Save the Boundary Waters Campaign to deploy this project and determine how it can create the most impact.
